Asbestos and PCB destruction have been demonstrated with thermochemical conversion. The technology is now permitted by the EPA as an alternative technology for asbestos disposal, has a U.S. TSCA permit for PCB destruction and is listed as Best Available Technique (BAT) by the Integrated Pollution Prevention Control Bureau for asbestos destruction in the European Union.

The two electron photomicrographs below show asbestos fibers (chrysotile) and the same material that has been subjected to thermochemical treatment. These two images illustrate the dramatic change that takes place when asbestos is thermochemically converted.
