Washington State-based ARI Technologies Inc. steps into Japanese asbestos destruction market with its most advanced technology

January 14 , 2007 - Kent, WA —

ARI Technologies Inc. in Washington State in the USA, which has received global acclaim for its advanced asbestos destruction technology, has decided to step into the Japanese asbestos destruction market by setting up a new joint venture (JV) company with Japanese partners who are engaged in processing waste materials. The JV Company is called “ARI Japan Corporation”.

ARI’s Thermochemical Conversion Technology (TCCT) uses substantially lower temperatures to destroy asbestos contaminated materials (ACM) resulting in energy input that is less than half that of conventional melting methods. The energy savings and simplicity of the process results in much lower costs to destroy this toxic waste. Thus, TCCT is expected to become one of the most useful technologies for ACM destruction in Japan in the near future.

TCCT has obtained a National Operating permit from EPA in the USA. In addition, TCCT is cited as the Best Available Technique (BAT) in the European Union. TCCT has already realized commercial-scale operation and has processed large quantities of friable and non-friable ACM through US Army and Department of Energy (DOE) projects. Since similar technologies in Japan are at experimental or pilot stage, TCCT is years ahead in commercial development.

After obtaining the Ministry of Environment’s (MOE) new permit for safe destruction of asbestos at a temperature lower than 1500, ARI with its Japanese partners plans on promoting TCCT application across Japan.

The Joint Venture is strong by obtaining support from the Washington State Department of Community Trade and Economic Development (CTED) office as well as from the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and Hyogo Prefecture, Washington office. Some large Japanese corporations are also supporting the effort.

Such a project structure is ideal because it strengthens the economic cooperation between the USA and Japan, which is desired by the Japanese government. It is projected that TCCT will play a big role in destructing huge quantities of asbestos that are expected to be removed from thousands of buildings in Japan. It is currently estimated that 10 million tons of ACM will require destruction. Implementation of TCCT will create significant social benefits .
