waste

€10 million investment
will create 30 jobs
Irish
Environmental Processes (IEP) today announced it is
to seek planning permission, and EPA licencing, for
a pioneering new technology to dispose of Irish asbestos
waste. The proposed 25,000 sq ft plant will be located
on part of the former Asahi plant in Killala, County
Mayo.
Speaking
today IEP Managing Director James Cahill said: “We
are delighted to introduce this new technology to
Ireland to deal with the disposal of asbestos waste.
This €10 million investment will create 30 jobs
for the local economy and will generate €1 million
in additional annual revenue for the local community.”
The
technology uses a thermo-chemical conversion process
that transforms asbestos into a harmless gravel that
can be used in the building industry. It has been
developed over the last 14 years in the USA by ARI
Technologies.
The
plant will handle only asbestos waste from the Irish
Republic, which has been produced by the construction
industry. “This system will provide a solution
to Ireland’s current asbestos waste problem
in compliance with national and EU waste policy,”
said Cahill.
All
the asbestos material will arrive, sealed in heavy
duty polythene, and will be handled under strictly
controlled conditions.

“This
is a proven technology, which is already licensed
by the United States Environmental Protection Agency
and an assessment carried out by the Dutch Government
favours this process above all alternatives,”
said Cahill.
“In
addition, the European Integrated Pollution Prevention
and Control Bureau has included the technology in
its second draft of the waste treatments BREF document
as best available technology.”
James
Cahill is a qualified veterinary surgeon, and a former
managing director of a leading Irish asbestos abatement
firm, which carried out major contracts for the Office
of Public Works, health boards and multinational clients.
He has extensive experience of the asbestos industry
in Ireland.
